About the Book
Mama's String is a children's story
which deals with childhood separation anxiety. It teaches about that
blessed bond between Mother and child as the child ventures off to
school. In the beginning of the story, Emma Rose leaves her doll,
Hannah, upstairs and is afraid to go up and get her. Mama is busy in
the kitchen preparing Grandpa's Birthday Party and tells Emma to go
up by herself. She takes a skein of rainbow yarn out of her basket and gives
one end to Emma. Mama tucks the other end in her pocket, because everyone
knows that Mama's pocket is the safest place on earth. Emma winds
her way upstairs and successfully retrieves the doll. Life goes on
and summer passes.
At the end of summer she realizes that she has to leave Mama and go
to Kindergarten. She has a fun day. On the way home from school, she
and Mama talk about her day. They learn that now, they have an
imaginary string between them tucked in the pockets of their hearts. |
