About The Book
Sissy & the King
is based on John 10:1-18, and explores the relationship between
Sissy (represents mankind), and the King (represents God). The book
is chocked full of symbols of God’s grace and love even in light of
our bad decisions. It is a story of temptation, choices, repentance,
and forgiveness. Much like the story of the prodigal son it gives
children an illustrated look into the consequences of our actions.
The discussion guide that follows gives direction in possible topics
of discussion and scripture to aid parents and teachers in getting
even deeper into the meanings portrayed.
With children
spending so little time learning about God compared to the amount of
time spent learning about reading, writing, and arithmetic this book
gives us another opportunity to teach about Him.
The story begins
with Sissy living in peace (Eden), under the King’s protection,
illustrated by the lion and the lamb lying down together.
Sissy encounters
a trial in her life, the scattering of her flock. She makes two
choices that lead her away from the King: to fear rather than trust
God and Godly counsel, and instead to listen to counsel from Badbad,
Satan.
Having been
blinded by Badbad, she is unable to read the signs around her.
She does not see
Badbad’s false appearance and danger signs literally posted on the
gate. Sissy is drawn away by sin. She finds herself lost and in
darkness, apart from her family, and apart from God. God however is
still beside her, as illustrated by the faint footprints beside her
own as she journeys with Badbad into the darkness.
In a moment of
revelation, Sissy realizes she is lost. When Badbad reveals his
identity as Satan, Sissy cries out to her friends for help. Satan
tells her more lies, and she cries out to the King who immediately
hears her because he has never left her side. She realizes the King
is the only one who can save her and asks for forgiveness.
The King sends
her friends to help. They bring the Bible with them to help her find
her way back to the flock. When she arrives home, there is a
celebration waiting for her. She is grateful for being saved and
dedicates her life to the King.
Badbad continues
to induce Sissy to follow him, but she stays strong by remaining in
the protection of the flock, reading the King’s holy book, and
spending time with the King. The story comes full circle as the lion
and the lamb lay down together.
There is a
discussion guide that accompanies the book. In it, the author
emphasizes important points and ties them to the scriptures,
highlighting areas of discussion such as creation, God’s provisions,
faith, fear, family tragedies such as the loss of a loved one or
divorce, drugs, alcohol, sin, repentance, salvation, and living and
growing in our Christian walk. |
